For nearly six decades, Tricia the elephant was a beloved icon of Western Australia, touching the hearts of millions who visited Perth Zoo. Arriving in 1963 from Vietnam, Tricia became more than just an attraction-she was a gentle giant, a cherished companion to those who worked with her, and a symbol of connection between people and wildlife. Her intelligence, grace, and quiet wisdom made an unforgettable impact on generations of visitors.
Tricia passed away in July 2022 at the age of 65, leaving behind a legacy that will never fade. Now, that legacy continues through the work of Indigenous artist Ross Potter, whose life-size drawing of Tricia the elephant is now on display at Yungarra Gallery in Dunsborough.
Ross Potter, renowned for his hyper-realistic graphite drawings, employs a distinctive artistic process. "I need to see how she moves, how she holds herself, and feel her presence and truly get to know her before I can capture it on paper. He was given rare access to spend intimate time with her, studying her movements, feeling her energy, and understanding the quiet wisdom she carried. This deep connection is evident in his drawing, a life-size tribute that captures Tricia's physical form and her essence.
