Internal Walls comes from my memories of growing up in a big family of nine. I was blessed to have my mother there; she was a strong presence in our lives. She would often sit us down, just like in this painting, and tell us stories about our people and about my nana Rose, who was taken from her family, re-homed, and put to work. Those stories stayed with me. They taught me to be grateful and to know how lucky we were to still be together as a family, connected to nature and to each other, when so many others weren’t as fortunate.
The bricks on the bottom right represent the strength of my mother and the foundation she gave our family. The growth of nature through me as a young girl in the painting shows my love for country and how that love continues to grow through me, something I owe to her. This painting marks the beginning of my journey to share my people’s history and stories through my art
